It was a proud moment for surgeons of the state of Assam when Professor Dr Subhash Khanna of Guwahati was declared President elect of the Indian Gastro intestinal laparoscopic surgeons society for the year 2017 and 2018 at the 14th Annual conference of the association held at Hyderabad from 8th to 11th February .Indian association of Gastro intestinal Endo Surgeons(IAGES) is an organization of surgeons formed to promote and spread advancement of endoscopic Surgery through India and beyond.
Dr Khanna would be the first among the surgical fraternity of the state and the north east to be elected president of a national surgical body.
Dr Subhash Khanna considered father of laparoscopic surgery in Assam would become the 14th President of the prestigious association in its silver jubilee year 2018 having over 6000 members from all over the country.
The Indian association was started by pioneer surgeons across the country in 1993 led by founder president and this year S Padma bhushan awardee Dr Tehempton Udwadia and later was led by the likes of Padmshri Dr Pradeep Chowbey,DR B C ROY awardee Dr Ajay Kriplani among others.
Dr Khanna was invited by Dr Udwadia to join the association in 1994 as the first executive member from east India and later he became Vice president of the association for three consecutive terms. Dr Khanna a former President of association of Surgeons of Assam brought the association to the limelight and by becoming national convener of the Fellowship training programme and training and offering fellowship to an unprecedented number of 800 surgeons in one calendar year.He was also instrumental in starting the most popular e newsletter of Indian is association of gastrointestinal endo surgeons “IAGES Times” and through the newsletter he kept the members united and updated .
He was instrumental in training and offering fellowship to nearly 800 surgeons of the different parts of the country during the year 2016.
All these fellows received their fellowship in his hands at a glittering function at Hyderabad International Convention Centre. He was felicitated By Prof Udwadia and Dr Srinivas the health minister of Telangana, Hyderabad as the most successful convenor of all times.
He also demonstrated his Hybrid technique of single hole laparoscopic surgery live on a patient at Global hospitals Hyderabad to about 1100 surgeon members attending the conference. Dr Khanna was of the opinion that the surgeons of the north east are doing good and innovative work but our work is not properly represented at the national forum due to various reasons. We also do not find a place at national body as we have very few voters surgeon members. He expressed his desire to show case and represent the state and its surgeons.
